100 Gallery Entries! Now vote for the best!
Published April 11, 2006
I would like to announce that today Liquid Designs reached its 100th gallery entry. That means 100 well-made examples of effective flexible design for the whole world to see. We’ve come a long way from December 11th, 2003 when Matt said:
Was it that long ago that flexible-width designs were all the rage? They came in with a bang, and left with a whimper. Is anyone still holding out? Are there any good flexible sites left? The only place I see it anymore [is] in web applications (such as the WordPress administration interface) and in lightly designed e-commerce sites like Amazon.
As of April 11, 2006 we can proudly say we have 100 great examples of flexible width designs built with CSS (and there’s more in my queue waiting to be added). To celebrate this day I’ve decided to put together a hall of fame for entries at Liquid Designs. The best sites from each group of 100 entries will be recognized in the hall of fame for their awesome-ness. It is up to you to help me pick the first group of these sites.
To help me pick the finalists for entry into the Hall of Fame I called on the help of 4 guest reviewers. They were all very gracious for responding at such short notice and contributing their choices. Before I go on I would like to thank them:
- Bryan Veloso, Avalonstar
- Phil Adams, the computer snob
- Tim Graham, timospage.com
- Foxy, foxy m cloud
I presented to them my top entries since the launch of Liquid Designs and they each chose their favorite 5. I then compiled all the choices that were agreed upon by at least 2 reviewers, making for 7 finalists.

i voted for vivabit because the implementation and attention to detail is killer. but i wanted to say i hadnt seen kevadamson.com before this poll - and that is the most original design i’ve seen in a long time. we need more of that sort of stuff to break out of the cookie cutter world!
1 vote here for an honourable mention.

I voted for Vivabit, but they are all really great.

Vivabit is the best!

Put me down for none of the above. They’re all arguing with me by telling me my preferred font size is too big, or ignoring it entirely.

VivaBit - not just for the design (the colours!) but for sheer impact. It’s a rare site that makes me want to stay and find out more just based on the design.

Dammit, I’m so used to doing it for other sites but shouldn’t have capitalised the v and b there on vivabit

I voted for the kevadamson.com because it has a lot of originality IMO. They are all great looking sites so it was a tough decision.

This is a really close battle! Each site is a fine example of ‘liquid’ layouts…the acid-test I suppose is which breaks last at a reduced size + gracefully looks the best while doing it!!
For this reason - Vivabit’s site earns my vote.

Had to be voting for VivaBit one damn fine site. Although they all prove what can be done and it wasn’t that easy to choose. Good idea using a hall of fame. What about updates for site changes? Not that I notice my entry is now out of date lol.

karmatosed: I hope that entrants who change their sites would notify me via the “submit” page. I did update webstandards.org and I removed Livejournal.com when they went fixed. I’ll probably update your site after the reboot. The scary thing is if a site changes from liquid to fixed. That makes the web standards wasp cry.

Watchmaker! How refreshing to see such a clean, uncluttered, site. Excellent work!

Normally I’d be drawn to sites like Kevadamson and Jason Santa Maria’s due to it’s “worn” look (although I absolutely love the scrawly textures and “crumpled look” on Kevadamson’s). However, my vote goes to Vivabit because the well-organized and beautifully presented information. The site is navigable as well as aesthetically pleasing. It’s difficult enough to constrain an enormous amount of information into one page, and the designer (Cameron Moll?) did an excellent job doing this.

Definitely vote for Dagon-Labs!

He ain’t heavy…he’s my brother. But that’s not the only reason I voted for kevadamson.com. I’ve known Kev since he was squealing like a piglet in a nappy - but enough about what he was up to last week. Sure, vote for the others if you favour the ‘corporate’ look but if you want to champion individuality and creativity then big up my bruv!
