New topic: “How do i make this flexible?” by Arnerd

hello guys

i made a design for a website wich is going to sell plants ...

this is how it should look

now the thing that is keeping me busy, is how do i make this work
for every resolution, starting from 800*600 ....

i want all visitors to see the bottom of the grass ...
and depending on theyr resolution, they will see less or much sky ...

the top navigation is flash, with a transparent background ...
i always want that part at the top ...

and then the 6 gray boxes, are the thumbs of the plant-pics.
the plant itself is a png image, so the plant will change when the thumbs are clicked.

so the problem is, when people are on 800*600, the nav, thumbs and plant will not fit on the screen. so is it possible to make those 3 scale themself when the screen resolution is not high enough?
also i need some help on the css on this ... im not able to make myself a descent liquid basic design for this ...

any help, or push is the right direction is very appreciated, also a tutorial or a template wich looks like this, is very welcome

so much thanks in advance
grtz

My best advice is that instead of using floats, you give the divs

display:inline;

and then give them enough margin on either side to keep them apart. Then you can apply

text-align:center;

to the wrapping element and they'll be centered on the page while wrapping.

Greetings all. I'm so glad I found this place. I'm so in need of a support group for liquid/fluid design! I should have come here years ago!

Getting to my question: Over at Floatutorial is a step-by-step for creating a thumbnail image gallery with CSS and floats.

What I would like to do is center the div's on the page while still allowing them to wrap onto a new line. I prefer to do it without JavaScript, though that may not be realistic.

Any ideas? I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on this to no avail.

It really depends on the project you are working on; neither is better and you don't want to force yourself to use one method for all cases. It's simply a matter of deciding when you want to make something scale and be flexible; I wanted that for my blog (http://www.christianmontoya.com), so it would be easy to read on small screens and still take advantage of the available space on large screens. I've done the same with a few other projects, but I've also done projects that were fixed width.

This site just exists as a resource for when you do want to make an elastic site, and even if you don't need to, it can be fun (or painful)! It's always worth a try.

Hi,

I realise this is the sort of post that could get flamed big time, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing why 'elastic' design is so much better than fixed width design? From a design viewpoint I have to say that I find making something look good using a fixed size is much much easier than just letting it all 'hang out'. I have to say though that this site is pretty nice to look at, so if people here can persuade me that fluid is the way to go, I'll try and design that way from now on...
